How to Prepare for Home Blood Tests

Preparing properly for a blood test at home is just as important as it would be for a hospital visit. The accuracy of your test results depends significantly on how you prepare in the 24 hours before the sample collection. For fasting blood tests — which include fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, liver function tests, and basic metabolic panels — you should not eat or drink anything except water for 10 to 12 hours before the sample collection. This means if your phlebotomist is scheduled to arrive at 8:00 AM, your last meal should be by 8:00 PM the previous evening. You should drink water normally to stay hydrated, as dehydration makes veins harder to locate and can concentrate your blood components, potentially skewing results. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before any blood test, as alcohol can temporarily affect liver enzymes, blood sugar levels, and triglyceride readings.

Medication management is another critical preparation step. If you take daily medications, ask your doctor or our care coordinator whether you should take your usual dose on the morning of the test. Some medications — particularly thyroid medications, blood thinners like warfarin, and certain blood pressure drugs — can affect test results and may need to be withheld until after the sample is collected. However, never stop taking prescribed medication without explicit medical advice. Our phlebotomist will note down any medications you have taken when they collect the sample, and this information is forwarded to the laboratory along with your test requisition.

On the day of the test, wear a loose-fitting short-sleeved top to make it easier for the phlebotomist to access your arm. Ensure you have your doctor's test requisition form (if provided) and your CNIC ready.
